Cost is $85.00/hour lesson

Puppy Primer ($100 / 4 classes)

This class is designed for puppies up to 5 months old. The puppy primer class will cover potty training, how to prevent puppy behaviors (nipping, chewing, mouthing, etc.), crate training, drop, handling and attention commands. 30 minutes of the class is designated for structured learning, and the other 30 minutes is for socialization. It is extremely important for a puppy to meet as many people, see as many places, and experience as many things as possible in the first 5 months of life. Unfortunately, it is hard to do this safely. Our training environment will give puppies a head start to learning how to interact with other dogs and people. By the time they complete the course, they will be ready for Beginner Obedience! It is extremely recommended that all puppies have a least 2-3 sets of shots, and must have a complete set of vaccinations if they are over 4 months. Classes will meet once a week for an hour, and run for 4 weeks.

Beginner Obedience ($140 / 6 classes)

This class is suitable for all dogs 4 months and over. We will cover all the basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, stand, leave, take, drop and come, as well as walking nicely on lead and paying attention. Behavioral issues (barking, jumping, digging, nipping and chewing to name a few!) will also be covered in the class. We will work in areas of high and low distractions, which will help to maintain control and attention, even when you are out in the ‘real world’. All dogs will be evaluated (in a fun way!) at the end of class, and will receive a Completion Certificate for passing all 7 stations of training. Classes will meet once a week for an hour, and run for 6 weeks. All dogs participating must be current on all vaccinations.

Intermediate Obedience ($140 / 6 weeks)

This class is for those individuals who would like to make their good dog, a great dog! We will be building on the skills that were taught in the Beginner Obedience Class, by adding more distance and more distractions. We will also be ‘proofing’ the command (which means making sure the dogs can do them in any environment without a lure or visible reward). We will also teach new commands such as Heel, Stand and Wait. Dogs and owners will learn to work as a team through fun exercises designed to teach attention and focus in high distractions. Dogs will not only receive a graduation certificate, but their picture in a cap and gown! Classes meet once a week for an hour, and run for 6 weeks. All dogs participating must be current on all vaccinations.

CGC Class ($100 / 4 weeks)

Now that your dog has graduated, can he be a good citizen? The Canine Good Citizen Test was designed by the A.K.C. to “teach responsible dog ownership to owners, and certify dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to be reliable, well-behaved member of their families and communities (A.K.C. CGC Evaluators Guide)”. This class will introduce owners and dogs to the 10 tests that will be necessary to pass the AKC CGC test. 3 weeks will be spent on the testing sections, and the last week will be spent with a final Q&A before administering the test to each dog. The test is free of charge with the class (although there is a nominal fee for ordering certificates, tags and patches from the AKC). Classes will meet once a week for an hour, and run for 4 weeks. All dogs participating must be current on all vaccinations.

Agility for Fun! ($140 / 6 weeks)

Do you want something fun to do with your dog? Ever wonder how they would do in Agility? Here is your chance to find out! Try your ‘paw’ at this fast-paced, quick-thinking, world-wide sport! During this class, we will be introducing your dog to all the different types of equipment used in running a course. We will also focus on teaching your dog how to use the obstacles safely, as well as sequencing the obstacles together for a chance at a full run during the last session! Classes are taught in an enclosed yard with plenty of room for the dogs to work. Classes meet once a week for an hour, and run for 6 weeks. All dogs participating must be current on all vaccinations.

At this time you will be given a demonstration of your dog's obedience skills and the trainer will teach you handling skills and hand signals. Your trainer will discuss your behavior issues and tailor a correctional approach for you to follow at home. You will receive a Diploma upon graduation and scheduled follow-ups are always free.

Prestonwood Kennels Welcomes our New Dog Trainer, Katie Hiett

My name is Katie Hiett, and I have been around dogs my entire life. My family and I have two dogs we share our life with, Annabelle Lee (A 10 year old Shepherd/Lab mix) and Matilda Jane (An 9 year old Cattle Dog mix). I began training dogs in April of 2000. Over the years, I have earned my Certified Pet Dog Trainer title through the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). I was also certified by the AKC to administer the Canine Good Citizen Test in 2003. I have attended countless seminars and conferences through the APDT and IACP (International Association of Canine Professionals) to stay current in techniques and equipment. My career has allowed me the pleasure of working with hundreds of dogs and owners of all backgrounds and abilities. From puppies to senior dogs, blind or deaf dogs to doggie amputees, I have had the joy of being able to teach them all the skills they need to ensure a happy life. I have also had the fortune of being able to train in many different environments as well. I have taught in boarding kennels, shelters, in-home and at parks. The majority of my career was spent at PetSmart where I believed I could reach the most people and save the most dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed my position as an Area Trainer there for 8 years. Not only was I in charge of the training in my store, but I was also responsible for training other trainers as well. After much consideration, I resigned at the beginning of 2010 to stay at home with my young daughter. I quickly missed training dogs, and found that friends, family members and past clients, continued to call on my expertise to help train their canine family members. I started Annabelle's Academy to continue the mission of helping dogs stay out of shelters and in loving homes where they belong. In October of 2011, I began teaching with Prestonwood Kennels, offering group classes and agility classes. My passion is to educate people about the pets they love, and teach their pets how to function in a human society, so they can both live in harmony together!
